This week at GOLD was buzzing with energy, new faces, and plenty of “aha!” moments.
On Tuesday, our Photos & QR Codes class packed the room to capacity. Phones were out, cameras were snapping, and nearly everyone was scanning QR codes or practicing organizing photos. The best part? That spark of recognition when several attendees realized they could create photo albums right on their phone. Suddenly, ideas flowed: albums of “grandchildren,” “fall,” “my trips.” Those little discoveries are what make tech feel personal. And as always, the one-on-one help and even peer-to-peer guidance gave the class a warm, inclusive feel.
Wednesday brought another full house for our Scam Prevention class. The conversations were lively and heartfelt, with attendees opening up about phone call scams and sharing their own experiences. Many don’t spend much time online, but nearly everyone uses their phone, and it was powerful to see how engaged the group was in learning how to stay safe. The room was filled with both newcomers and familiar faces, each helping build a safe space to talk about a tough subject.
On Thursday, we took things virtual with Meet Your Sidekick: ChatGPT. It was a playful, eye-opening session where folks across the area joined on Zoom to learn what AI is, how it works, and how it can make everyday life a little easier. From curiosity to laughter, it was a reminder that learning can stretch beyond the classroom walls.
Looking back, the common thread this week was connection, through photos, through shared stories of scams, and even through exploring brand-new technology together. Whether in person or online, the energy in our classes shows just how eager our community is to keep learning and growing!

GOLD recently had the privilege of speaking at a meeting of the Apex Lions Club, sharing our mission of bridging the gap between technology and the older adults it was built to serve. The conversation centered on the three pillars of GOLD's work: digital health literacy (helping seniors confidently navigate tools like MyChart), scam prevention through our S.C.A.M. framework (Stop, Confirm, Avoid, Make a Report), and AI literacy for everyday life. We also talked about a guiding principle...
If you’ve been to the doctor’s office recently, you may have noticed something new. Your physician might have mentioned something about it, using phrases or words like “automatic note taking” or “ambient scribe”. This might sound a little unfamiliar at first, so let’s break it down. What Are AI Recordings? AI recordings use artificial intelligence to listen during a doctor’s office and assist with turning the conversation into medical notes that are stored in your health record. Think of it...
AI is everywhere, but so are the myths about it. Learn the truth about what AI can and can't do, and why it's a tool, not a replacement for human thinking.
