GOLD Speaks at the Apex Lions Club

GOLD Speaks at the Apex Lions Club

GOLD recently had the privilege of speaking at a meeting of the Apex Lions Club, sharing our mission of bridging the gap between technology and the older adults it was built to serve.

The conversation centered on the three pillars of GOLD's work: digital health literacy (helping seniors confidently navigate tools like MyChart), scam prevention through our S.C.A.M. framework (Stop, Confirm, Avoid, Make a Report), and AI literacy for everyday life. We also talked about a guiding principle behind everything we do: Access does not equal Ability. Giving someone a smartphone or a patient portal login isn't the same as giving them the confidence to use it well.

What made the evening especially meaningful was the alignment between our two organizations. Since 1937, the Apex Lions Club has been quietly shaping the town of Apex, providing eye exams and glasses, scholarships for Apex High School seniors, hearing aids, vision screenings, and decades of community service rooted in their motto: Loving Individuals Offering Needed Services. You can read more about their nearly 90-year history here.

Apex is one of the communities GOLD serves closely here in the Triangle, and it's a place where the digital divide shows up in very real ways. A grandparent locked out of their MyChart account. A retiree targeted by a scam call. A neighbor curious about AI but unsure where to start. That's the gap GOLD exists to bridge, and we're grateful to organizations like the Apex Lions for opening their doors and helping us reach more of the people who need it most.
