Have you been hearing about AI everywhere… and wondering whether it's actually useful for you?

I'm RJ with GOLD. We're a nonprofit that's helped more than eleven thousand people build confidence with technology. And lately, the question we hear most is: “What is AI, and how can I actually use it?”

In a nutshell: the AI tools you hear about most, like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Claude, are digital assistants you can talk to in plain, everyday words. You ask a question or describe what you need, and it writes back in seconds.

It can help with the things you'd normally look up online. Like what to make for dinner with what's already in your fridge. Or what a confusing word on your insurance statement actually means. Instead of clicking through pages of ads and search results, you just ask, and get a clear answer in plain English. And it's easier than you might think.

We'll show you how to do all of this and more. And just as important, how to use it safely: never typing in personal details like your policy number, and double-checking anything about your health or money with a source you trust.

Everything is short, friendly, and made to try at your own pace. And if you'd like a hand, we're right there with you.

Just enter your name and email right here on this page, and we'll send you your free Hello, AI Starter Kit, the blueprint to get you started. And you won't be doing this alone. We're here to help, every step of the way.

What you'll be able to do

A calm first step into AI

  1. Know what AI is

Understand what tools like Gemini can and cannot do, in plain language.

  2. Try one useful task

Ask for help writing, planning, explaining, or organizing something real.

  3. Use it more safely

Know what to keep private, and when to double-check an answer.

You don't need to learn everything. You only need a comfortable place to begin.

Peace of mind

Curious is good. Careful is smart.

  • Keep passwords, Social Security numbers, banking details, and medical records private.

  • Treat an AI answer as a starting point, not the final word.

  • Double-check health, money, legal, and safety information with a trusted source.

  • Pause if an answer pushes you to click, pay, download, or share private information.

Questions are welcome

Is the program really free?

Yes. The Starter Kit and introductory lessons are free.

Do I need to be good with technology?

No. We start with one small, useful task and explain unfamiliar words as they come up.

Is this only for people over 50?

It's designed around the needs and questions of adults 50+, but everyone is welcome to use the Starter Kit.

Do I need to install anything?

No. You can read the materials and watch the videos in a web browser. The practice lesson shows you how to use Gemini on its website.

Why does GOLD ask my age range?

GOLD serves adults 50+. Knowing the age ranges we reach helps us measure whether our programs are reaching the people they were created for.

Will you call or text me?

No. We don't ask for a phone number. GOLD contacts you by email only, and you can unsubscribe anytime.

GOLD (Growing Older Living Digitally) is a North Carolina 501(c)(3) nonprofit helping adults 50+ build confidence with technology. We believe access to technology doesn't automatically create the ability to use it. Support, practice, and respect matter.
