Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere these days, in apps on our phones, tools doctors use, and even in how stores recommend products. But there are many myths and misunderstandings about what AI really is and what it can actually do. Let’s clear up some of the most common ones!
AI does not think, understand, or feel the way that humans do. Many people imagine AI as a kind of artificial brain with thoughts and emotions. In truth, AI is a software that looks for patterns in data and predicts what comes next. It doesn’t have consciousness or self-awareness.

AI may change jobs but it won’t take away work from humans. AI excels at specific tasks that involve large amounts of repetition, like sorting information or recognizing patterns in data. However, it isn’t able to replace the creativity, emotional intelligence, judgement, and real-world experience that people bring into their work. In most cases, AI is designed to assist people, not replace them.
AI can reflect the biases in the data it learns from. Since AI is trained on real-world data, it can unintentionally adopt the same biases that are found in that data. This is why human oversight and careful design are essential when using AI in many different areas.

AI can make mistakes and even offer misleading information. AI tools, like ChatGPT, can sound very confident in their answers, but they aren’t always correct. They may offer outdated, incomplete, or even misleading information, depending on where it draws the information from. It is always a good idea to double-check important information!
AI systems still rely heavily on humans. People design AI systems, choose the data they learn from, and monitor how they behave. AI does not set its own goals or make independent decisions about what it should do next. Human guidance and oversight are still essential to making AI work.
At its core, artificial intelligence is a set of tools created by people to help analyze information, solve problems, and make everyday tasks easier. Understanding what AI can and cannot do can help us use it wisely and safely with realistic expectations.

GOLD recently had the privilege of speaking at a meeting of the Apex Lions Club, sharing our mission of bridging the gap between technology and the older adults it was built to serve. The conversation centered on the three pillars of GOLD's work: digital health literacy (helping seniors confidently navigate tools like MyChart), scam prevention through our S.C.A.M. framework (Stop, Confirm, Avoid, Make a Report), and AI literacy for everyday life. We also talked about a guiding principle...
If you’ve been to the doctor’s office recently, you may have noticed something new. Your physician might have mentioned something about it, using phrases or words like “automatic note taking” or “ambient scribe”. This might sound a little unfamiliar at first, so let’s break it down. What Are AI Recordings? AI recordings use artificial intelligence to listen during a doctor’s office and assist with turning the conversation into medical notes that are stored in your health record. Think of it...
